Test-Driven Infrastructure with Ansible
GumGum's operations team manages over 800 EC2 instances using around 100 Ansible roles that touch technologies like Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Storm, and Kafka among others.Today’s operation team uses automations to provision, configure and build AWS AMIs and production clusters. Automations have become a critical resource we need to make 100% reliable.
In this talk you will learn:
# Brief review of Ansible key concepts.
# How to write testable and reliable Ansible roles (configure, test and cleanup) using Ansible itself (no extra learning needed).

Building a serverless data pipeline
Collecting web data for both real-time and batch processing is a common problem. Of course, there are many ways to solve it, but they often require a lot of complex IT plumbing which creates even more issues around scalability, reliability, performance and monitoring. Wouldn’t you rather spend time working on your business projects, creating value for your company and your customers ? The purpose of this presentation is to show you how you can quickly build such a pipeline, using a serverless architecture based on highly available, highly scalable AWS managed services… and VERY little code. After a brief introduction to AWS Lambda, we’ll build the pipeline step by step, using only managed services: Amazon API Gateway, Lambda, DynamoDB, DynamoDB streams, Kinesis and S3. And of course, we’re going to test it!

Ethics in software development
In Silicon Valley (and increasingly outside of it), there's a sort of mantra virtually every CEO will tell you: "We're making the world a better place". It's an easy thing to say and to believe in. It's tempting, because it sounds so simple, yet so beautiful; endearing, but vague enough to hold no meaning. As coworkers and managers, we should ask ourselves: are we treating our team members well? When in leadership positions, are we paying a fair wage? As software creators: are we honest towards our users? Can the product/service we develop be used to exploit others, be it intentionally or by accident? If so, what can we do about that, if anything at all? What about copyrights? Privacy? I am hoping that we can explore that together with the audience. Let's think about where our work fits in the un/ethical spectrum, and get inspired to introduce changes in what we do.

ITiocracy

ITiocracy ?

Application deployment & operations with a cloud platform like Cloud Foundry - patterns & benefits
Promotion of application to production is one of the biggest challenge faced after Dev. team adopted DevOps. It's not about automation of installation or Dev. having "root password" or throwing container off the wall but it's about enabling production services around the application, while ensuring the maximum level of automation: attaching backend services like database, log aggregation, attaching load balancer and be ready to elastically scale, and do that while another version of a production is already running and do a transparent switchover from v1 to v2.And may be do that across multiple clouds - private & public or environments - UAT / Pre-Prod / Prod, all at the same time.
Sounds impossible ?Come discover how 12 factors and more importantly modern container based platform like Cloud Foundry get you on track.

Using and Abusing Container Metadata
Limited Capacity filling up

Container systems (such as Docker) promise lots of benefits, and many organisations are using them - or starting to experiment with them- as part of a CI/CD system. In this session we'll explore some of the powerful things you can do with Container metadata and labels - or how you could mis-use metadata to make a terrible mess!

* Build your own container image and understand how the content layers are built up from your Dockerfile.
* Explore Dockerfile labels and other metadata contained within a container image.
* Learn how metadata is inherited from a base image, and experiment with ways it can be mis-used - or reveal potentially unexpected information about the container images you're using.
* See how metadata can be automated through Makefiles and other build systems

This session assumes a very basic knowledge of containers (we'll be using Docker for the examples, though other container systems are available!) Attendees can get a head start by signing up for a free Docker ID so that you can sign in to Docker Hub (hub.docker.com). If you have existing public container images on Docker Hub, that's even better, but it's not a requirement as you'll be able to create an image during the session.

IMPORTANT: for this workshop, you need to have Docker installed already on your laptops (as well as having a Docker Hub account set up)

1 year inside the Kube
As developers, we often don’t want to deal with, or even hear about, how our softwares are hosted and managed. Yet, in my career, I acted as the CTO of several startups and whether I liked or not, I I had to stop tinkering, and start to extend to my servers the same principles I use in my code : reducing accidental complexity.

Base on our work on Jamshake.com, I’ll try to explain our path to Kubernetes on GKE, with its joys, its pains, and its happy end (so far).

Is Automating This Worth My Time?
Is automation worth the time? Is it worth your time? The answer is surprisingly complex! Often, the correct response is to leverage existing APIs and services to enable you to do the most important work of all – the things that only humans can do, turn your ideas into reality. Sometimes the answer is a financial one – will the time and money I save from automating this task be worth the time and money wasted automating it? Sometimes the answer is related to performance! Can the computer routinely do this faster than I can? Can it routinely do this faster than 10 other humans? In this talk we analyze the various ways of removing the undifferentiated heavy lifting that computers are so good at and letting humans do the work. Finally, I want to share some best practices from my career experience about the way you automate things! I'll talk about automating everything from launch abort systems at NASA and SpaceX to webcam pictures on your laptop. There will be a live demonstration so come prepared to come on stage and battle a computer!
